The problem

The benefits of social media are undeniable. Yet its harms are clearly growing and reaching more and more people. Depression, anxiety and body dysmorphia have risen in recent years, partly linked to excessive social media use. Taking steps to mitigate these effects is crucial. A designer’s role is to investigate problems and propose solutions — and that principle is the foundation of this project.

The audience

Teenagers are especially susceptible to social media, since they readily absorb outside examples and influences. Without more established social structures — such as marriage, children or a job — they face a higher risk of suicidal behavior. This group makes up 26.6% of active social media users, around 39.9 million people.
